The acne may have cleared from your face, but the scars that it has left behind still give you nightmares. If you are among the women who have too many scars on your face from acne, then chemical peel may be the solution for your troubles. Many skin specialists recommend chemical peel for acne scars that are too stubborn. This is because any topical cream or treatment can only treat the top layer of the skin while acne scars are buried deep, along the many layer of the skin.
What are Chemical Peels?
Chemical peeling is a treatment in which the skin is subjected to chemicals that peel off the layers of the skin that are ridden with acne, wrinkles or any of the skin problems that you want to address. Once the layers are removed, fresh skin is generated in the place of the peeled off skin. The depth of removal of skin depends on the problem that needs to be taken care of. Peels can be superficial, medium depth or deep peels. Medium and deep peels need to be performed by a professional when the patient is sedated. If you have prominent acne scars, then mild peels that you can do at home will not be effective. You would need to go in for a professional treatment.
Types of Chemical peels
There are many kinds of chemical peels, namely Alpha Hydroxy acid peels(AHA), beta hydroxy acid peels(BHA), Jessner’s peel, Retinoic Acid peel, Trichloroacetic acid(TCA) peels and phenol peels. Each kind of peel is used according to different needs. BHAs, retinoic acid peels, TCAs and phenol peels are effective in removing deep rooted acne scars.

How Chemical Peels can treat Acne Scars?
A superficial peel cannot help you get rid of acne scars. You would need a medium or a deep peel done in order to treat it.
Medium peels are done under the influence of a sedation. The chemical in liquid form is applied on cleaned skin and is left on the skin for about half an hour to 40 minutes. During this time, it penetrates through the epidermis onto the dermis. The chemical is neutralized at the end and the peel is wiped off. It can cost between $500 to $1500 for the treatment.
Deep chemical peels are most effective in getting rid of acne scars and give you smoother and clearer skin lasting close to a decade. It is a complex procedure, needing you to be sedated. It is normally a phenol peel. If absorbed by the body in large doses then phenol can be toxic. Hence it needs to be done with a qualified practitioner only. The skin is cleaned and the chemical is applied on it in phases, area by area, so that too much phenol doesn’t get into the system. Once the peel is removed, the skin is secured with tape. The treatment can cost $2000 to $6000.
A medium peel takes about a couple of days to heal while a deep chemical peel can take weeks. However, when the skin heals, you will be able to see all the top layers of the skin removed and the acne scars removed. You would need to cleanse the skin regularly and follow the skin care regimen suggested by your doctor after this.
