Make your own Calamine Lotion

Calamine Lotion is normally used as an anti-pruritic or an anti-itching agent to treat conditions like eczema, poison ivy, rashes, stings and sunburn. It is also used to prevent infections caused by scratching the skin. Calamine is a pink colored powder that is composed of zinc oxide and a small amount of ferric (iron) oxide. It is from this powder that the lotion is made. While you can pick up a bottle of calamine lotion from the drugstore, it is not everyday that you would be using it. What you could do is to buy the raw materials needed to make calamine lotion and make your own calamine lotion at home, whenever you need, in small batches. That way, you are not only saving a lot of money, since making it at home is very cheap, but also getting the satisfaction of knowing what is going into your lotion. Here is our recipe to make your own calamine lotion.

Ingredients needed for Calamine Lotion

  • 1/4 cup zinc oxide
  • 1/2 tsp iron oxide
  • 4 tsp baking soda
  • 4 tsp bentonite clay or kaolin clay

Zinc Oxide and Bentonite Clay can be purchased from your local chemist. Zinc is a constituent in many ointments to treat skin infections and rashes. Bentonite Clay helps in detoxification of the body. You could also use kaolin clay instead. It lends the lotion the light pink color that store-bought  calamine lotions have. Iron Oxide can be bought at any craft store since it is used as a colorant. Even in this lotion, it is used to add the characteristic pink color to the calamine lotion.

The Baking Soda is an excellent neutralizing agent. It also helps reduce any itching in the body. Glycerin  is used here to add body to the lotion and also since it has moisturizing properties. When it comes to essential oils, you could use any essential oil of your choice but choose an oil that has anti-inflammatory and anti bacterial properties for best results.

Method to make the Calamine Lotion

Calamine Lotion

There are two ways to doing this.

Method 1

Combine all the ingredients in a big bowl and transfer into a bottle. Refrigerate and use when needed. Since we are not adding any preservatives to this, the mixture will not last longer than a month. If you don’t want to be bothered with making it every single time and want to extend the shelf life, try method 2.

Method 2

Mix all the dry ingredients together and store in a bottle in a cool and dry place. Whenever you need some calamine to soothe your skin, take a tsp of the powder, add a tsp of water, a drop of glycerin and a drop of essential oil. Mix well, thin down more if need be and apply. As simple as that!

If finding zinc oxide and iron oxide is difficult, you can actually skip them and simply use bentonite clay as the main ingredient. Bentonite clay more or less has the same properties as zinc oxide, in that it binds to the skin to remove all the toxins that have gone in from a sting or an infection. If you are doing it with only bentonite clay, the ingredients would be

  • 4 tsp bentonite clay
  • 4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp glycerin
  • 5 drops tea tree oil
  • Water to dilute

Simply mix all the ingredients except water and then dilute it to the required consistency using water. Adding pink kaolin clay will give the pink color to the lotion. Sea salt helps in relieving swelling, itching and skin irritation and hence is used in this solution.

So you see how simple it is to make calamine lotion at home. With the temperatures outside increasing, it is best to make a bottle and store in your refrigerator. That way, every time you return from an outing in the sun, you can slather some cooling calamine lotion on your face for relief from sunburn.
