Constantly running out of expensive dish wash liquids? Do you think that you tend to use up too much of it and they get over too soon? Well, you are not alone. Many of us find that a fresh bottle gets used up in no time and we are constantly refilling it much before the end of the month. The solution to avoiding the whole expense cycle on liquid dish soap is to make your own at home. Do it yourself, did we say? Yes! It is not rocket science to put together a dish cleaning liquid and we tell you here how you can easily put together a homemade liquid dish soap.
Why a Homemade Liquid Dish Soap?
Once you buy the raw materials needed to make the soap, your recurring costs will be much lesser than what you spend on the purchase of refills month after month. You can make the soap to suit your own needs- thick, gel like or thin and watery. You can even add your own favorite fragrance to it without having to resort to the standard citrus flavors that most liquid dish soaps come in. All this, at a fraction of your monthly expense on the store bought dish soap! What are we waiting for, let’s get started with the recipe.

Ingredients for the Homemade Liquid Soap
To make nearly 2 cups of liquid soap, you would need
- 1 and 1/2 cups of water
- 1 tsp washing soda
- 1 tsp glycerin
- 1/4 cup castile soap*, grated
- 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil.
*Castile soap is an olive oil based soap that is popular in many countries. You can find it at your chemist, else substitute it with any handmade soap bar. Simply grate it and get 1/4 cup of the gratings.
Washing Soda is not the same as your laundry detergent. It can be bought at any of your local stores at a very low cost. You can stock up on all the ingredients in bulk and use them up little by little to make batches of liquid dish soap. The addition of glycerin to this dish soap makes it gentle on the hands. The soap gratings add thickness to your liquid soap and make it creamy and gel like.
Steps to prepare the Homemade Liquid Dish Soap
Heat the water until it is boiling hot. Add all the remaining ingredients in a deep pan and mix well. Make sure that there are no lumps in the washing soda. Now pour the water over these ingredients and whisk it well to form a smooth paste. If you have a blender, you could even use it to whip the entire mixture. Allow it to cool and pour it into a pump bottle. You can store excess soap in a zipper pouch or a bottle and use it to refill when you are out of dish soap.
This soap is effective in removing oil and grime from your vessels. If you find it too thick, you can thin it down with some water. If it is thin, you could add some more soap shavings. The essential oils will make the time you spend doing dishes aromatic. And I bet this liquid dish soap is gentler on your hands when compared to your store bought dish soap.
