Calamine lotion is a medicated cream that contains chemicals and like any chemical preparation, it too could have some side effects. Though rare, it is important to know about these side effects so that you can make an informed decision about whether or not to use it. Skin sensitivity is usually the common side effect. In very rare cases, the skin would break into hives or the person may experience asphyxiation and trouble breathing. Calamine could be toxic if ingested. Zinc oxide can be poisonous to the human body, and depending on the quantities of the lotion consumed, it can cause zinc oxide poisoning. If not treated immediately, it could be fatal as well. If ingested in small quantities, the lotion may trigger allergic reactions. Some brands of calamine lotion may not be suitable for general use. Some companies often add small amounts of local anaesthetics to increase pain relieving properties of the lotion. This could cause an increased risk of side effects.
